BaselWorld released an update to their BaselWorld mobile application last week that brings it up to speed for this year’s show. The app is built with technology from Inside Guidance, a company that specializes in mobile applications that use 3d maps to “redefine the visitor experience.” The only notable downside to this application being updated is that you might be less inclined to pick up one of BaselWorld’s beautifully crafted paper maps.
I spent some time looking through the application today and predict it will be quite useful at BaselWorld 2012. When you first launch the application you will need to download approximately 1500 images, but these download in the background quite quickly. After you begin that download, you will see a beautiful animation of a camera pulling back over a 3d model of the the BaselWorld buildings. From this view you can control the camera and move around the models using the gesture controls on your smartphone. I then tapped on a specific building and the camera zoomed in so that I could explore the map of that building’s exhibitors. I can keep drilling down into the map and pull up a short profile on any exhibitor. This application is simply filled with useful features.
The application’s features allow you to:
- Search, browse and locate exhibitors on the 3D map
- Search exhibitors via products, brands and category
- Explore detailed information about exhibitors such as product lines,
- Search, browse and locate events on the 3D map and in the city map
- Read articles from the current issue of the BASELWORLD Daily News
- Explore the show design
- Explore top brands
- Access the media centre
- Synchronize exhibitor contact data to your address-book
- Synchronize exhibitor contact data to your calendar
- Email exhibitors directly from within the application
- Share exhibitors and events via Facebook, twitter and email
- Access useful information regarding your stay at the show
